Online marketing is full of new and unfamiliar terms.

And it seems that new ones are made up every day. Here's a guide to some of the words we might throw around a little too lightly.

Search Engine Optimization
The process of understanding the factors which determine where pages appear in search engine results, and then doing the work necessary to get specific pages to the top of results for selected keywords.

Search Engine Marketing
A slightly broader term which includes both the standard 'free' search results and the various paid listing services such as pay-per-click listings, paid inclusion, and paid / XML data feedsPlace text ads for specific keyworks in Overture, Google, and other engines.

Pay-Per-Click Advertising
Text ads which appear near or within search engine results. Pricing is often set by an auction which places the highest bidders in the top positions. You pay for the ad each time a user clicks the ad and visits your site.
